Nothing is computed here. The solve — 24,348 unknowns, a dense LU reference and a block-compressed operator agreeing to ~2×10⁻⁶ — ran in Python; this page moves three slices through its stored readout.

Four states share one geometry: the surface is flat or carries the hill, and the inclusion is soft or identical to its host. Differencing them isolates each effect, which is only well defined because every state was sampled on the same grid.

Every element is shown. Values within about half an element of a solved boundary are limited by the piecewise-constant density there — the topography effect reads 1287 mm at a point lying on the free surface against 96 mm well inside — but nothing is hidden on that account. The fault is a different case entirely: its smearing over ε is the finite-width fault zone the method is for, not a defect. See Concepts.

Pink outlines the fault, blue the inclusion, grey the box and the free surface. Stress is the elastic part: the eigenstress C:ε* that every mollified jump carries has been subtracted, which is what makes an on-fault value mean anything. See Concepts.
